Moore County cooling station for Carthage residents (not an emergency shelter)

Moore County opened a temporary cooling station for residents during extreme heat at the Moore County Sports Complex in the Carthage area.

The county’s notice said the station was a temporary, short-term reprieve from the heat, but it came with an important limitation: it was not an emergency shelter.

Where it was located

The cooling station was at the Moore County Sports Complex, 155 Hillcrest Park Lane, Carthage.

When it was open (the Carthage-area window)

Moore County said the temporary cooling station ran Thursday, July 2 through Monday, July 6, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day.

What it was for—and what it wasn’t

According to the county, the Cooling Station was intended to provide short-term relief during the hottest part of the day.

But the notice was clear about what residents would not get:

• Not an emergency shelter
• No food service
• No overnight accommodation

Pets and animals: the county’s rule

Moore County said: “For the safety and comfort of all visitors, animals are not permitted inside county facilities, except for service animals assisting individuals with disabilities.”

Where families could cool off on site, too

The county pointed residents to the on-site Splash Pad at the Sports Complex.

The Sports Complex facility page lists Splash Pad hours as 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily during its seasonal run (including Saturday, May 16, 2026 through Monday, September 7, 2026, with weekends in September).
