Most McCollum Park Improvements Open After Reported $2 Million Renovation
Most of the renovated amenities at McCollum Park are now open to the public after the Downers Grove Park District held a grand opening Monday, August 3, 2026. The horseshoe courts remain temporarily closed while newly installed sod becomes established.
McCollum Park is at 6801 Main St. in Downers Grove. Residents and families can use the new preschool and school-age playgrounds, outdoor fitness area, game areas and pavilion.
What is open
The completed portion of the improvement project includes separate play areas for preschool-age and school-age children, new outdoor fitness equipment, upgraded game areas and a new pavilion.
The Park District describes the improvements as inclusive, with accessible play elements and expanded access throughout the site. The project also adds shade structures, updated recreation features and synthetic turf surfacing in the renovated play and fitness areas.
Horseshoe courts remain closed
The horseshoe courts are not yet available. The Park District says they will remain temporarily closed while the new sod establishes.
No reopening date has been announced. Visitors should check the Park District’s project update for the latest court status before planning to use that portion of the park.
Grant supported the project
The Park District says the project is supported by a $600,000 Illinois Open Space Land Acquisition and Development, or OSLAD, grant awarded through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Downers Grove Wire reported the overall renovation cost at approximately $2 million. That is an independently reported project-cost estimate, separate from the Park District’s official announcement that most of the improvements are open.
For now, the renovated playgrounds, fitness area, game areas and pavilion are available at 6801 Main St., while the horseshoe courts remain closed during the sod-establishment period.
