Storm Recovery, Train Incident, and Cold Snap Shape Friday in Downers Grove
Downers Grove, IL — February 6, 2026 — Severe storm damage, a fatal train incident, and bitter cold weather marked a difficult 48 hours for the community.
Downers Grove is closing out the week after a challenging stretch of weather and public safety incidents that left a visible mark on the community.
Storm Damage at South High School
Cleanup continues following a confirmed tornado that moved through parts of Downers Grove late Wednesday night. The brief but intense storm caused significant damage at Downers Grove South High School, where athletic fields and outdoor facilities were heavily impacted.
Fencing was twisted, equipment scattered, and structures overturned as winds approached severe levels. No injuries were reported at the school, but district officials are assessing repairs and safety concerns as crews work to restore the campus.
Fatal Train Incident Near Washington Street
Early Friday morning, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train near the Washington Street crossing. Authorities say the incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. while railroad crossing gates were activated.
The individual has not yet been identified, and the investigation remains ongoing. Local police, along with rail authorities, are urging residents to use extra caution near tracks, especially during overnight hours and poor weather conditions.
Cold, Icy Conditions Linger
Residents are also dealing with a stretch of wintry weather, including light snow, freezing rain, and sharply colder temperatures. Wind chills dipped into the teens Friday evening, making travel and outdoor work more difficult.
Public works crews have been monitoring roads and bridges for slick spots, and residents are encouraged to slow down, dress warmly, and check on neighbors who may need assistance during the cold snap.
Looking Ahead
Clearer skies are expected later tonight, but cold temperatures will persist into the weekend. Village officials say updates on storm recovery and safety reminders will continue as needed.
