MPS Cuts Approved, Weather Whiplash and St. Patrick’s Day Closures Lead Milwaukee Headlines
Milwaukee, WI – March 12, 2026 – School board OKs 260+ job cuts, record heat flips to snow, and St. Patrick’s Day street closures begin.
It has been a busy week across Milwaukee, with major school budget decisions, dramatic weather swings and preparations underway for one of the city’s biggest spring traditions.
MPS Approves Over 260 Job Cuts
Milwaukee Public Schools will move forward with cutting more than 260 positions after a divided board vote Monday night. District leaders say the reductions are part of a plan to address a $46 million structural deficit.
The cuts focus largely on non-classroom roles, including assistant principals and central office staff. District officials say no classroom teachers are being eliminated specifically to close the budget gap, though staffing levels may shift in schools with declining enrollment.
The changes are expected to save roughly $30 million and would take effect for the 2026-27 school year.
From Record Heat to Snow Chances
Milwaukee set a record high of 72 degrees on March 9, breaking the previous mark for the date. The early taste of spring did not last long.
Forecasters say a series of systems are bringing cooler air, rain and even the possibility of hail and snow into the region this week. Temperatures have dropped back into the 40s, with additional rounds of unsettled weather possible heading into the weekend.
It is a sharp reminder that March in Wisconsin can deliver just about everything.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade Street Closures
Milwaukee’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade returns Saturday, March 14, and downtown drivers should plan ahead.
Temporary no-parking zones will be enforced along the parade route beginning at 7 a.m., with vehicles subject to towing. The parade steps off near North King Drive and West Wisconsin Avenue before looping through downtown streets including Plankinton Avenue, Kilbourn Avenue and Juneau Avenue.
City officials encourage residents to arrive early and expect traffic delays during and after the event.
BBQ & Brews Fest Returns to the Lakefront
Looking ahead to warmer days, organizers announced that Smoke On The Water, Milwaukee’s BBQ & Brews Fest, will return to Maier Festival Park on May 30.
The lakefront event will feature local barbecue vendors, tasting portions and live music, marking one of the first major outdoor food festivals of the season.
After a week of big decisions and bigger weather swings, Milwaukee is clearly shifting toward spring — even if winter is not quite ready to let go.
