New Brighton street project brings driveway restrictions, water-main work and August construction phases
Construction on several New Brighton residential streets is changing driveway access, water service and travel conditions as the city’s 2026 Street Rehabilitation project moves through its first phase.
Public Improvement Project 26-1 began its anticipated Phase A work on July 6, 2026. In its July 24 update, the city said crews were reconstructing 7th Street NW between 8th Avenue NW and 17th Avenue NW, preparing for new concrete curb and gutter and a multi-use trail, and beginning water-main replacement on 20th Avenue NW.
Driveway restrictions planned on 7th Street NW
Residents along 7th Street NW should expect a short-term access restriction after new concrete curb and gutter is installed. The city’s July 24 update said driveway access would be restricted for approximately seven days while the concrete cures.
Residents may park in front of their driveways overnight during that period, but the city asked them to park on adjacent avenues between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. so construction can continue. Notices were distributed to affected property owners.
The July 24 update described curb-and-gutter installation as planned to begin July 27, followed by work on the concrete trail on the north side of 7th Street NW. The city’s project page says local traffic and access to residences will otherwise be maintained by the contractor, although access may be interrupted during major construction events on a block.
Water-main work affects three connected areas
Water-main replacement work is continuing around 19th Avenue NW, 6th Street NW and 20th Avenue NW. After installation, the new main must be tested before contractors connect new water-service lines from the main to curb stops in the boulevard of each property.
The city’s earlier July 17 update said contractors were setting up and testing a temporary water-supply system for the three areas. Residents may need temporary water-service connections while the replacement work proceeds and should follow project notices and contractor instructions for block-specific changes.
The city said construction will bring localized closures, noise, dust and mud. Drivers are asked to slow down and watch for workers and equipment in the work areas. Mail, trash and recycling services are expected to remain uninterrupted.
Forestdale Road and Innsbruck Drive are scheduled for August
The city lists August 2026 as the anticipated start for Phase B work on Forestdale Road and Mimosa Lane and Phase C work on Innsbruck Drive. The project page identifies the broader street limits as 7th Street NW from 8th Avenue NW to Silver Lake Road; 19th Avenue NW from 6th Street NW to 7th Street NW; 20th Avenue NW from 6th Street NW to 7th Street NW; 6th Street NW between 20th Avenue NW and 19th Avenue NW; Forestdale Road from Silver Lake Road to the cul-de-sac; and Innsbruck Drive from Silver Lake Road to the city limits.
Individual phase dates differ. The city anticipates completion of the overall project by October 31, 2026. The city’s project page lists an anticipated July 31 completion for the 7th Street NW segment between 8th Avenue NW and 17th Avenue NW and an anticipated September 4 completion for the segment between Silver Lake Road and 17th Avenue NW.
Scope and cost context
Planned improvements include pavement replacement, a multi-use path along 7th Street NW and Innsbruck Drive, a sidewalk along 19th Avenue NW, enhanced pedestrian crossings, partial curb-and-gutter replacement, water-main and fire-hydrant replacement in selected areas, and storm-sewer improvements.
A city feasibility study estimated the project at $8,264,600. That figure is an estimate in the feasibility and public-improvement documents, not a confirmed assessment, tax increase or final contract price.

Major construction is generally scheduled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Some Saturday work is permitted from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
