Newark, DE Daily Brief: Snow, Hoops and Jazz
Newark, DE — February 7, 2026 — Light snow, chilly temps, UD hoops at the Bob and a jazz visit from the U.S. Army Blues line up a full Saturday around town.
Newark Daily: Snowy Saturday, Hoops & Campus Notes
Newark eases into Saturday with light snow, midwinter cold and a busy slate of campus events that will keep Main Street and the UD area moving.
Cold start with light snow
Forecasters call for light snow early today around Newark before skies trend mostly cloudy this afternoon. Highs should hover near the low 30s, with wind chills making it feel colder. Side streets, parking lots and bridges may stay slick this morning, so give yourself extra time if you are heading to work, errands or youth sports.
Tonight looks dry but very cold, with temperatures sliding back into the teens and 20s. If you are out late around downtown or the Christiana Mall area, plan on bundling up and watching for refreezing on less-traveled roads and sidewalks.
Blue Hens back at the Bob
After a hard-fought 75–69 home loss to Liberty on Thursday, the Delaware men’s basketball team is right back on the floor today at the Bob Carpenter Center. Justyn Fernandez led the Hens with 21 points in that game, and the team will try to bounce back and protect its home court.
Delaware hosts Middle Tennessee this afternoon, with tipoff set for 1 p.m. The matchup brings another Conference USA opponent to Newark as the Hens look to improve on a 6–16 record and build momentum in front of a weekend crowd. Expect extra traffic on South College Avenue before and after the game.
US Army Blues bring jazz to campus
Last night, the U.S. Army Blues, the Army’s premier jazz ensemble, performed a free concert in Loudis Recital Hall at the Amy du Pont Music Building. The 19-piece band is known for mixing classic big-band charts with modern jazz arrangements and educational outreach.
The appearance was part of a run of winter arts programming at the University of Delaware, which continues through the month with concerts, films and student events open to the community. It is a good reminder to keep an eye on campus listings if you are looking for low-cost cultural options close to home.
Around town
Between the light snow, game-day traffic and lingering cold, today is a day to move a little slower around Newark. If you are headed to the reservoir trails, local parks or Main Street, consider using public parking lots and walking where you can. Checking in on older neighbors and anyone without reliable heat is especially important as temperatures dip again overnight.
