Saturday local update

Niles heads into the first weekend of February with a mix of nightlife, community fundraisers and a reminder about cold-weather resources.

Tonight: Live music and celebrations

Several venues in and around the Milwaukee Avenue corridor are booked with shows this evening, giving residents plenty of options close to home.

• Multiple regional Latin bands are scheduled at local nightclubs, with staggered start times from early evening into the night.
• A 30th anniversary red-carpet gala for a professional association is set at a Niles banquet hall, featuring dinner, dancing and awards.
• A Valentine themed pet portrait session runs this afternoon at a neighborhood dog care business, offering keepsake photos for families and their pets.

Township notes: Closures and food pantry events

Niles Township is reminding residents that township offices will be closed on February 12 for Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday and on February 16 for Presidents Day. Those dates also affect access to some in-person services.

Later in the month, a Soup Group community event will return on February 25, with neighbors sharing homemade soups and raising money for the township food pantry. The township board is also scheduled to meet on February 9.

Village calendar: Meetings and art showcase

The village calendar shows a Foreign Fire Tax Fund meeting held on February 6, with the next round of public meetings coming on February 11, when the fire pension board and a bicycle and pedestrian advisory group are set to convene.

Looking a bit farther ahead, the Regular Board of Trustees meeting is scheduled for February 24, and a community art showcase is planned for February 19, adding a cultural note to the winter schedule.

Cold-weather reminder: Warming centers open

With winter weather still settling over the region, the village is keeping warming centers available at the Human Services building and the family fitness center on Civic Center Drive during regular business hours.

Outside of those hours, residents who need help can call the village’s family services line to be connected with an on-call crisis worker, and anyone facing an immediate emergency should continue to use 9-1-1.

Local school and activity calendars for February also note upcoming days off for conferences and President’s Day, as well as evening cultural and student events later in the month. It is a good weekend to double check dates, especially if you have travel or child care to plan.
