Norfolk-Area Gas Falls Below $4 as Diesel Moves Higher
Norfolk-area regular gas averaged $3.983 on August 1, down from last week, while diesel reached $5.318 and continued rising for fleets and businesses.
Regular gasoline in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News metro fell below $4 per gallon in AAA’s August 1, 2026, price check, while diesel moved slightly higher and stayed above $5.30. The split gives gasoline users a modestly lower average than a week ago while leaving heavier fuel costs for diesel-dependent vehicles and equipment.
Gasoline slips below $4
AAA listed the metro average for regular gasoline at $3.983 per gallon. That was down 1.3 cents from the previous day’s $3.996 average and 7.4 cents below the $4.057 average recorded a week earlier.
The latest average was still higher than the metro’s $3.678 average a month earlier and $3.136 average a year earlier. Those comparisons show that the recent decline has not erased the longer-term increase in gasoline costs.
The figure is a metro average, not a guaranteed price at every station in Norfolk. Actual prices can vary by neighborhood, station brand, membership program, payment method and the time of day.
Diesel moves in the opposite direction
Diesel averaged $5.318 per gallon, according to AAA. That was an increase of 0.2 cents from the previous day’s $5.316 average and 1.4 cents from the $5.304 average recorded a week earlier.
Diesel was also above its $4.877 metro average from a month earlier and its $3.680 average from a year earlier. For drivers of diesel-powered vehicles, the immediate threshold is that the average remains above $5.30.
Different effects for households and businesses
Commuters and weekend travelers using regular gasoline may see somewhat lower costs than they did a week ago, although the savings from a few cents per gallon will depend on vehicle size, driving distance and local station pricing. Drivers who fill larger tanks will notice the change more than those making occasional short trips.
Diesel-dependent businesses face a different calculation. Fuel is one part of operating costs for trucking, delivery operations, contracting, construction, service calls, restaurant deliveries and other fleet-dependent work. Higher diesel prices can raise the cost of moving materials, making deliveries and serving customers, although the AAA averages do not document a price change for any particular Norfolk business.
For now, the latest AAA check shows gasoline easing while diesel continues to rise. The next updates will show whether regular gas remains below $4 and whether diesel holds above $5.30.
