Infrastructure: City seeks bids for storm sewer cleaning

The City of North Chicago is moving ahead with its annual storm sewer cleaning and televising program for fiscal year 2026. A new bid request calls for contractors to help clean and inspect the storm system, with the goal of covering the entire city network over the next few years.

Bids are due by the afternoon of February 20, 2026, at the city’s Building Department on Lewis Avenue. The city has budgeted around $150,000 for this year’s work and may extend the contract in future years if the project goes well. Early voting for Illinois’ 2026 primary election is ramping up across the region. Lake County’s plan includes a mix of countywide sites and satellite locations that open in stages through early March, ahead of the March 17 Primary Election Day.

In addition to sites in Waukegan, Mundelein, Deerfield and other communities, the county lists the North Chicago Public Library on Argonne Drive as an early voting location with extended hours. Residents who prefer to vote early will be able to cast ballots there or request a mail-in ballot through the county clerk’s office.

Development: Sheridan Crossing cleanup continues

County and city leaders are still working toward a major overhaul of the long-vacant Sheridan Crossing site at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Sheridan Road, across from Naval Station Great Lakes. The 40-acre former industrial property has required extensive environmental cleanup before any new construction can begin.

A remediation effort launched late last year is aimed at making the site safe for a walkable downtown-style district, with multi-story buildings that could combine street-level shops and restaurants with housing above. Federal funding, including a multimillion-dollar grant routed through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is helping pay for the cleanup and preparation work.
