North River Road Near Mount Crawford to Close July 30 for I-81 Repairs
Mount Crawford, VA, drivers should expect a Route 867 closure at the I-81 overpass from July 30 through as late as August 6, plus overnight interstate restrictions.
Route 867, also known as North River Road, is scheduled to close at the Interstate 81 overpass near Mount Crawford beginning Thursday night, July 30, while crews make bridge repairs. The closure may last up to one week and is listed through August 6, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The closure affects North River Road between the Mount Crawford town limits and Route 693, also known as Fairview Road. VDOT said the work is related to damage from a vehicle strike that occurred last fall.
Detours will use Route 11 and Route 257/682
VDOTโs detour directs eastbound motorists north on Route 11, east on Route 257/682, also known as Friedens Church Road, and south on Route 867. Westbound traffic will travel north on Route 867, west on Route 682/257, and south on Route 11.
Drivers who normally use North River Road to cross I-81 should review the posted detour before leaving. The closure may also require route planning for commuters, delivery operators, employees traveling to nearby businesses and residents making routine trips through the area.
Overnight I-81 restrictions are separate
VDOT also announced overnight single-lane restrictions on I-81 near mile marker 239.5 as bridge-beam work begins. Those restrictions are separate from the full Route 867 closure and may affect interstate travelers passing the work area during overnight hours.
The agencyโs Staunton District traffic alert lists the Route 867 closure from July 30 through August 6. VDOT says schedules are subject to change because of weather and construction conditions, so August 6 should be treated as the outside of the current work window rather than a guaranteed reopening date.
What Mount Crawford drivers should watch
Residents, commuters and businesses near the closure should allow additional time and follow posted detour signs during the work period. Drivers should also be prepared for changing traffic patterns on I-81, particularly overnight near the bridge.
The closure could end before August 6 if construction progresses sooner, but VDOTโs current schedule allows the Route 867 bridge work to continue for up to one week.
