Norwalk Primaries Bring Permanent Polling-Place Changes

Norwalk’s Democratic and Republican primary elections are scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, with permanent polling-place changes affecting some voters who have used former school sites.

Early voting at Norwalk City Hall ran from Aug. 3 through Aug. 9. Voters who cast ballots on Election Day must use the polling place assigned to them rather than City Hall, making the location changes especially important for residents accustomed to older polling sites.

Some voters moved to Dr. Ruby Shaw

Voters previously assigned to Maritime Odyssey Magnet School or the former Columbus School polling location have been permanently reassigned to Dr. Ruby Shaw Elementary School, at 1 Meadow Street Extension.

The reassignment is not limited to the Aug. 11 primary. The change is permanent, so voters who remember going to Maritime Odyssey Magnet School or the former Columbus School location should not assume those sites remain their Election Day polling places.

Rowayton voters also have a designated location that differs from the neighborhood school some residents may expect. They continue to vote at Roton Middle School, 201 Highland Avenue, rather than at Rowayton Elementary School.

The changes affect where certain voters cast their ballots, but they do not change the basic party-registration rules for the primary. Only registered Democrats may vote in the Democratic primary, and only registered Republicans may vote in the Republican primary.

Early voting schedule has ended

The City Hall early-voting period covered seven days, from Aug. 3 through Aug. 9. Hours were 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Tuesday and Thursday, early voting was available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Those hours provided multiple opportunities to vote before the primary, but they applied to early voting at City Hall. They do not mean that all Norwalk voters use City Hall on Election Day. For Aug. 11 voting, residents need to go to their assigned polling place, including the newly designated Dr. Ruby Shaw site for voters moved from the former locations.

Tabulator testing began before the primary

The city also announced public logic-and-accuracy testing of voting tabulators beginning July 28, ahead of the Aug. 11 election. The testing is part of the city’s preparation for the primary and occurred before voters cast ballots on Election Day.

Norwalk’s immediate scheduled election is therefore both a party primary and a practical polling-place check for some residents. The most significant location change involves voters moved from Maritime Odyssey Magnet School and the former Columbus School site to Dr. Ruby Shaw Elementary School. In Rowayton, the continuing assignment is Roton Middle School instead of Rowayton Elementary School.

With early voting finished, the Aug. 11 primary will be conducted at assigned polling places. Participation remains limited by party registration, and the permanent site changes mean that familiarity with a previous school location is not enough to identify where every voter should go.
