NYC Summer Rising Ends for Middle School Students; K–5 Continues
New York City’s Summer Rising programming for students in grades 6–8 reached its scheduled end Friday, Aug. 7, shifting the city’s summer-learning and supervised daytime coverage for participating middle-school students. Programming for students in kindergarten through fifth grade remains open through Friday, Aug. 14.
The dates apply to the 2026 Summer Rising schedule operated through a partnership between NYC Public Schools and the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development. The program began July 1 and runs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
What changed Aug. 7
For families with participating students in grades 6–8, the scheduled Summer Rising session has ended. That means the program’s summer-learning and supervised daytime programming is no longer continuing for those grades under the published 2026 calendar.
The end of the middle-school session is a scheduled milestone, not a newly announced policy change. NYC Public Schools described the middle-school program as a six-week schedule ending Aug. 7. The elementary schedule is longer, with seven weeks of programming ending Aug. 14.
The published dates do not establish that every site closed simultaneously or provide a citywide attendance total. They describe the program schedule for participating students and families.
Elementary programming continues
Families with participating K–5 students have another week of Summer Rising programming. The elementary session remains scheduled to continue through Friday, Aug. 14, giving those students access to the program’s summer-learning and supervised daytime services during the final week.
The city’s program information also identifies meals as part of what elementary students continue receiving during the remaining programming period. That makes the Aug. 14 date a practical deadline for families planning around daytime supervision, summer learning and meal access.
Summer Rising operates across New York City schools and community sites. Because the approved program information does not provide site-by-site schedules beyond the published grade-level end dates, families should rely on their program’s direct information for any location-specific details.
Heat-safety guidance remains relevant
NYC Public Schools advises families to monitor the city’s heat-safety guidance during summer programming. That guidance remains relevant for elementary students attending through Aug. 14, as well as for families making plans around the program’s weekday operating hours.
The program’s regular schedule is 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Those hours describe the published operating schedule; they do not mean every New York City student is enrolled or that all students use the full day.
What happens next
The next scheduled program deadline is Friday, Aug. 14, when K–5 Summer Rising programming is set to end. After that date, the 2026 Summer Rising calendar supplied by NYC Public Schools has no further grade-level programming dates listed in the approved information.
For New York City families, the immediate distinction is by grade: the middle-school session has ended, while elementary programming continues for one more week. The city’s published schedule and heat-safety guidance are the key reference points for participating families during that transition.
