Oakland Daily Brief: Tube trouble, school cuts, and a free Black history night
Oakland, CA – February 26, 2026 – Tube service is disrupted again, OUSD weighs major cuts amid strike talk, and Kaiser Center hosts free Black history night.
1) Transbay Tube disruption hits commuters again
BART service through the Transbay Tube was halted Thursday morning, stopping trains between West Oakland and 24th St. Mission while crews worked through a network or communications issue. Riders in Downtown Oakland and West Oakland were pushed to buses and ferries, and station platforms quickly filled with people trying to re-route the morning commute.
The breakdown is the second major Tube shutdown in less than a week, adding fresh frustration for riders who rely on cross-bay service for jobs and school. BART has warned that repeated disruptions also complicate its bigger push to stabilize finances and maintain reliable service.
2) OUSD weighs deep cuts as strike threat looms
Oakland Unified leaders moved toward a high-stakes budget vote this week, with district officials proposing large staffing reductions as they work to close a deficit. The cuts under consideration include student-support roles such as tutors, paraeducators, and campus supervision staff, as well as other positions across the system.
At the same time, labor talks with the teachers union continued amid a strike authorization. District leaders say they are trying to avoid school closures and keep reductions as far from classrooms as possible, but the scale of the gap has put nearly every program under pressure.
3) West Oakland fire linked to earlier Tube shutdown
Separately, BART said a fire near the West Oakland station over the weekend damaged critical radio or communications cables used to run trains through the tunnel. The incident forced a lengthy shutdown and highlighted an ongoing problem: fires near tracks can knock out essential equipment even when flames are not directly in stations.
4) Free Black History Month celebration tonight at Kaiser Center
Looking for something upbeat after a commute-heavy week: Oakland is hosting a free evening of music, art, spoken word, and food as part of a Black History Month celebration at the recently reopened Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts. Organizers say the event is designed to highlight local creatives and chefs while marking 100 years of Black history in Oakland.
