Wildfire danger stays on the radar
Wildfire concerns remain a key regional story this weekend after several large fires burned across Oklahoma and Kansas over the last few days. A major blaze to the northwest of Oklahoma City, along with fires in Beaver County and across the state line, has scorched vast acreages and forced evacuations in smaller communities.
While these fires are well outside the core metro, Oklahoma City agencies are urging residents to stay alert. Recent high winds, low humidity and very dry grass mean any local fire could still spread quickly. Residents are being asked to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains that might spark on roadways, and report smoke or fire to 911 without delay.
Red Flag Warning and weather whiplash
On Thursday, a Red Flag Warning covered central Oklahoma, including the Oklahoma City metro, as gusty west winds and single-digit to low‑teens humidity created critical fire‑weather conditions. Even minor sparks had the potential to become fast‑moving grass fires, prompting local officials to discourage outdoor grilling, burning and welding during the afternoon and early evening hours.
Since then, a quick pattern change has brought a sharp temperature swing. After freezing early‑morning readings and highs closer to 50 degrees, forecasters now expect a rapid warmup into the upper 60s and possibly near 80 in the coming days. The combination of warmer temperatures, dry air and occasionally breezy south winds may keep fire risk elevated at times, especially west of the city.
Thunder ride new addition to strong home win
On the sports front, the Oklahoma City Thunder gave local fans a lift with a decisive 105–86 home win over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night. Newly acquired guard Jared McCain came off the bench to score 21 points, his best outing since joining the team earlier this month.
The performance was especially timely with several Thunder starters, including MVP Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander and 2025 All‑Star Jalen Williams, sidelined by injuries. The win helps the Thunder keep pace in the Western Conference race and gives the reshuffled lineup a confidence boost heading into the next stretch of games at Paycom Center.
Civic notes: State regulators meet in OKC
At the state level, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission held a special meeting in Oklahoma City on February 17. The Commission, which regulates utilities, oil and gas and other key industries, continues to meet at the Will Rogers Memorial Office Building on North Lincoln Boulevard. Residents can track agendas and watch future meetings online to stay informed on rate cases, energy policy and other decisions that affect daily life and monthly bills.
