Ontonagon Marina Reopens, but Construction Delays Continue

Ontonagon Marina and the adjacent boating access site reopened July 16, 2026, after dredging work. Boaters can use the facilities again, but construction-related delays may continue before a longer scheduled closure begins this fall.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources guidance says breakwall grouting is still underway and may produce significant noise for 12 or more hours per day. The guidance also warns that gravel deliveries and barge activity may temporarily affect launch and retrieval timing.

Temporary delays may continue this summer

Gravel deliveries could require the launch to close for a full day. The DNR says advance notice is planned when possible, but boat owners should check current updates before making a launch or retrieval trip.

A large gravel barge operating between the launch and the breakwall may also delay the movement of watercraft. The agency does not describe a continuous closure before October 1, but construction activity may still affect access and timing on particular workdays.

Harbor dredging is planned for the fall

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced July 27, 2026, that hydraulic dredging of Ontonagon Harbor is planned from mid-September through October 2026. Boaters and others using the harbor should follow posted work-area boundaries and safety instructions during the project.

The federal schedule overlaps with the latter part of the current boating season. For Ontonagon, the practical issue is the timing of the planned work in the local harbor, which gives boat owners another reason to verify conditions before traveling to the marina.

A longer closure is scheduled for October

The DNR lists a scheduled closure of the Ontonagon Marina and boating access site from October 1, 2026, through July 31, 2027. The planned closure is tied to harbor redevelopment and replacement of in-water marina structures.

For residents, boat owners, fishing traffic and businesses that rely on harbor access, the important distinction is between current temporary disruptions and the scheduled longer closure. The marina has reopened, but access may still be interrupted by grouting, gravel deliveries, barge activity and fall dredging before the redevelopment period begins.
