Pink Farewell, New Courthouse and Crane Questions Lead St. Pete Headlines
St. Petersburg, FL – March 8, 2026 – Downtown’s pink-painted apartments, a new $59M courthouse and crane concerns top weekend headlines.
It’s been a busy stretch in downtown St. Petersburg, where bold paint, major public investment and lingering storm questions are shaping the conversation.
Pink Sendoff Before Demolition
Century-old apartment buildings at Fourth Avenue South and Fourth Street South have been coated in bright pink as part of a public art push ahead of demolition. The buildings, some dating back to 1916, are slated to make way for a planned 29-story luxury condo tower.
Artists recently gathered for mural events that drew crowds and sparked debate about preservation, redevelopment and the pace of downtown change. Groundbreaking on the new tower is expected later this year.
$59 Million Courthouse Rises on Mirror Lake
Just a few blocks away, a new three-story courthouse overlooking Mirror Lake is nearing completion. The roughly 59,000-square-foot facility will house 15 judges, a ceremonial courtroom and space for nearly 100 staff members.
Lawmakers approved about $59 million for the project over several years, replacing the former Sebring Building on the site. City leaders say the new courthouse strengthens downtown’s role as a civic hub.
Future Unclear for Crane-Damaged Tower
Questions also continue to swirl around the partially built 400 Central condominium tower after a crane toppled during Hurricane Milton in 2024. The damaged structure remains one of the most visible reminders of the storm’s impact.
A state law that took effect in 2025 limits how local governments regulate cranes and similar equipment, adding complexity to oversight and next steps. Developers and city officials are still weighing options for the site.
Together, the stories reflect a city balancing growth, history and resilience — with downtown once again at the center of it all.
