Polar Plunge, Community Cleanup, and a Statewide Spotlight for New Bern
New Bern, NC — February 7, 2026 — Polar Plunge returns today, county cleanup events roll out, and New Bern lands a statewide downtown conference this spring.
A busy winter Saturday in New Bern
New Bern heads into the weekend with a mix of outdoor action, community service, and news that puts the city on a larger statewide stage. From chilly fundraisers to neighborhood cleanups, there’s plenty happening across town today.
Polar Plunge brings crowds to Lawson Creek
This morning, residents are gathering at Lawson Creek Park for the annual Polar Plunge hosted by the New Bern Police Department. Participants are braving cold waters to raise money supporting year-round programs for Special Olympics athletes across North Carolina.
The event has become a winter tradition locally, drawing plungers, costumed teams, and spectators alike. Registration begins mid-morning, followed by the main plunge and a short awards ceremony.
Countywide cleanups underway
Across New Bern and nearby communities, Craven County’s Clean Sweep and Little Sweep events are also taking place today. Drop-off and volunteer sites are set up at multiple municipal locations, including the county administration area in downtown New Bern.
The effort focuses on removing litter and helping residents dispose of waste responsibly, with organizers encouraging closed-toe shoes and early arrivals.
Antique show continues downtown
Downtown New Bern remains busy this weekend as the annual antique show and sale continues through Sunday. Dealers from across the region are showcasing furniture, collectibles, and decorative items, drawing steady foot traffic to local shops and restaurants.
New Bern selected for statewide conference
Looking ahead, city leaders confirmed this week that New Bern has been chosen to host the 25th North Carolina Main Street Conference in March. The multi-day event will bring planners, small business advocates, and downtown leaders from across the state to the Riverfront Convention Center.
The selection is expected to boost spring tourism and highlight New Bern’s ongoing downtown revitalization efforts.
