Buddhist Monks’ ‘Walk for Peace’ Reaches Richmond
On February 2, 2026, Richmond welcomed the Venerable Monks of the Dhammacetiya as they arrived on Day 100 of their 2,300-mile ‘Walk for Peace.’ The event drew thousands to City Hall, marking the largest crowd the monks had encountered in Virginia thus far. The gathering featured speeches promoting mindfulness, love, and kindness, delivered by the walk’s leader, Bhikkhu Pannakara, amidst a gathering of city and state officials.
The Richmond Fire Department noted the monks’ peaceful presence and hospitality, stating, “We thought we were hosting them, but they hosted us instead—through food, fellowship, and a quiet reminder of what peace looks like when it’s lived.” The monks’ journey continues into Henrico County, with their next appearance scheduled via Brook Road.
Community Engagement and Support
The ‘Walk for Peace’ aims to promote national healing, unity, and compassion. Residents and visitors lined the streets to hand the monks flowers and pay respects during their journey through Richmond. The event provided an opportunity for the community to come together in support of peace and mindfulness.
