Riverside Arts Groups Face July 27 Deadline for City Operating Grants

Riverside nonprofit arts and cultural organizations have until 4 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2026, to apply for the city’s new Arts & Culture Grant Program.
The two-year program is intended to provide general operating support to eligible organizations based in and serving Riverside. The city has allocated $410,050 for fiscal year 2026-27 and $414,151 for fiscal year 2027-28, for a combined two-year allocation of $824,201.
That money has not yet been awarded. The city’s guidelines say individual grant amounts will vary based on the number of qualified applicants and the available funding. Previous city support, demonstrated fiscal need or a strong application does not guarantee an award.
Who can apply
Applicants must be California nonprofit corporations with federal 501(c)(3) status and a primary mission involving arts and culture services for the public. Organizations must be located in Riverside, offer an annual series of accessible arts or cultural activities in the city and have at least three years of performing, producing or presenting history.
The guidelines also call for approximately $9,000 or more in expenses during the most recently completed fiscal year. Eligible disciplines include museums and curatorial arts, dance, design, literary arts, media and film, music, theater, visual arts, photography, public art and other listed fields. Arts service organizations may also qualify.
What the grants may support
The funding is designed for operating needs rather than a single restricted project. Allowable uses include general operating expenses, administrative salaries, marketing and promotional materials, equipment purchases or repairs and professional services such as accounting.
The program does not fund past debt, endowment funds, fundraising events, individual scholarships or tuition, board-member payments, for-profit organizations, programs that are inaccessible to the public or projects with religious or sectarian purposes.
No matching funds are required to apply, but applicants must show they can match an award dollar for dollar through earned income, cash contributions or grants. In-kind volunteer work does not count as a match under the city’s rules.
What applicants must submit
The application asks organizations to describe their mission, leadership, finances, programs, public benefit, service area and short-term goals for the next two years. Applicants must also identify the people and neighborhoods they serve, explain their administrative and financial capacity and provide a requested grant amount.
Required supporting materials include a current board list, a board-approved operating budget, the most recent fiscal-year financial statements, a mission statement and, when applicable, a strategic plan. Recent marketing materials and optional supporting materials such as videos, presentations or related links may also be included.
First-time applicants face an additional documentation requirement: financial statements, budgets and descriptions of operations or programs for the past three years.

Review timeline
The city’s planned schedule calls for application review during the week of Aug. 3, 2026, with award notifications planned for Friday, Sept. 25. The review process is public, although the panel’s final deliberation and scoring process will be held in closed session.
For Riverside arts organizations, the immediate step is submitting a complete application by the 4 p.m. deadline. Late applications will not be accepted, according to the city guidelines.
