Roanoke Gas Dips to $3.858 While Diesel Reaches $5.335
Regular gasoline edged lower in the Roanoke metro on Sunday, August 2, while diesel moved higher and remained above $5.30 per gallon, according to the latest AAA Virginia price check.
The split gives local drivers and businesses two different fuel stories: gasoline is slightly cheaper than it was yesterday and last week, while diesel costs more across every comparison period listed in the AAA table.
Regular gas is down short term but higher than a month ago
AAA listed the Roanoke metro average for regular gasoline at $3.858 per gallon on August 2. That was down 0.6 cents from the previous day and 2.4 cents from a week earlier.
The longer-term comparisons were less favorable. Regular gas was 29.6 cents more expensive than a month ago and 87.8 cents higher than a year ago. Compared with the July 29 check, the average was down 0.6 cents.
For commuters and households, the change amounts to modest short-term relief rather than a major drop in fuel costs. Filling a 15-gallon tank at the metro average would cost about $57.87, before station-specific discounts, loyalty savings or payment-method differences.
Diesel rises to $5.335 per gallon
Diesel moved in the opposite direction. AAA put the Roanoke metro average at $5.335 per gallon, up 0.3 cents from yesterday and 10.9 cents from a week ago.
Diesel was 52.9 cents higher than a month ago and $1.735 above its year-ago level. Compared with the July 29 check, diesel rose 9.5 cents per gallon.
That difference is especially important for delivery operators, contractors, farmers, restaurants that depend on regular deliveries, service companies and other businesses using diesel-powered vehicles or equipment. A 100-gallon purchase at Sunday’s metro average would cost about $533.50, before taxes, discounts or station-level variation.
Metro averages do not match every pump
AAA’s figures are Roanoke metro averages, not guaranteed prices at every station in the city or nearby communities. Individual pumps can vary based on location, competition, payment method, brand and fuel program.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration provides broader weekly gasoline and diesel data, but its release schedule does not always line up with AAA’s daily metro snapshot. The August 2 figures are therefore a current local market check, not a forecast of where prices will go next.
