Rochester Road rebuild plan points to two years of traffic changes in Rochester Hills

Rochester Hills drivers, businesses and nearby neighborhoods are being asked to prepare for a planned two-year reconstruction of Rochester Road, or M-150, between M-59/Hall Road and Tienken Road.

The Michigan Department of Transportation discussed the roughly $40 million project at public meetings held July 21 and July 30, 2026. Construction is planned for 2027 and 2028, but the project is not yet under construction and final traffic-control details have not been issued.

Work is planned in two construction years

MDOT plans to divide the work into two main portions. Reporting from the July meetings indicates that 2027 work would begin in March on the southern portion, starting at M-59 and moving toward the Clinton River bridge. Local 4 reported that the initial segment would run from M-59 to Avon Road before advancing farther north.

The second portion is planned for 2028 between the Paint Creek bridge and Tienken Road. The exact sequence, closure dates and final detour arrangements remain subject to later plans and construction notices.

For the 2027 work, MDOT officials said traffic staging could begin with one northbound lane on Rochester Road in March, followed by a switch to one southbound lane in July. Those restrictions could increase commute times and may push some traffic onto alternate roads, including nearby neighborhood streets.

Reconstruction would address more than pavement

MDOT says the project is intended to rebuild aging pavement and improve the corridor’s long-term drivability. Planned elements include new storm sewers, curbs and gutters, signs, pavement markings and four traffic signals.

The plans also include sidewalk improvements, including a proposed pedestrian connection over M-59. MDOT has described the project as a larger reconstruction because the pavement has reached the end of its service life, rather than a short-term resurfacing or patching job.

Businesses should remain open, but access could change

Lane reductions and changing traffic patterns could make it harder for customers and employees to reach businesses along or near Rochester Road. Business owners who spoke with CBS Detroit said they expect an impact but do not yet know its size.

MDOT officials said businesses will remain open and accessible during construction, with detours and signs intended to direct drivers. That commitment addresses access, but it does not guarantee normal travel times, unchanged entrances or unchanged visibility for businesses along the corridor.

Residents also raised concerns at the public meetings about neighborhood cut-through traffic, broader safety issues and the absence of a bike lane. Those comments are resident concerns, not official findings or final project decisions.
