City Council Approves $200K Subsidy for New McDonald’s
Rockford, IL — February 5, 2026 — The Rockford City Council voted 9-4 on Monday night to approve a $200,000 economic incentive for a planned McDonald’s at 4103 W. State Street. The project, proposed by First Midwest Group/Machesney Investments LLC, aims to revitalize the intersection of West State Street and Springfield Avenue, a corridor the city has invested millions to improve.
Supporters argue that the subsidy is crucial to close the financial gap for the project, which is expected to bring new life to the area. However, the proposal faced opposition from some council members and residents concerned about the use of taxpayer funds for a national chain restaurant.
The decision follows a series of discussions and debates over the past few weeks regarding the allocation of public funds for private development projects. The approval is seen as a significant step toward economic development in the west side of Rockford.
