Rockford Man Convicted in Fentanyl Delivery Resulting in Death
A Rockford man has been found guilty of delivering fentanyl to a hospital patient, resulting in her death. The case underscores the ongoing opioid crisis in the community.
Details of the Case
Authorities reported that Amyjo Cochran, a patient at OSF St. Anthony Hospital since an October 14, 2024, car crash, was found unresponsive in her room on November 11, 2024. Despite efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead after being removed from life support. A white substance found by her bed tested positive for fentanyl, but the hospital confirmed she had not been administered fentanyl at the time of her death. An autopsy determined she died of a drug overdose.
Investigations revealed texts on Cochran’s cell phone related to the purchase of drugs. Surveillance footage showed 46-year-old Ricky McGowens entering the hospital and visiting Cochran’s room two hours before she was found unresponsive. After a week-long jury trial, McGowens was found guilty of drug-induced homicide and delivery of a controlled substance. He faces more than 30 years in prison at his sentencing, scheduled for July 21, 2026.
Why It Matters Locally
This case highlights the ongoing opioid crisis in the community, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and preventive measures to combat drug-related fatalities.
