Extreme cold warning over Roselle

Weather alerts are in effect across Union County, with wind chills dropping well below zero through Sunday afternoon. Forecasts show single-digit air temperatures in Roselle today and tonight, with strong northwest gusts making it feel far colder.

Officials warn that frostbite can develop on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes in these conditions. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers with hats and gloves, bring pets inside, and watch for signs of hypothermia in older neighbors, young children, and anyone without reliable heat.

Emergency managers also remind residents that those struggling to stay warm can seek help finding shelter or warming spaces by calling 211 or checking county resources.

Snow removal rules and parking changes nearby

Just north of the borough line, Roselle Park’s public works crews began an intensive round of snow removal on Friday, with no-parking periods posted from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on key streets. Those operations continue as crews work to widen travel lanes and clear piles at corners.

The neighboring borough is stressing that cars must be moved from streets marked “No Parking When Road Is Snow Covered.” Vehicles left in the way can be ticketed or towed so plows and emergency vehicles have room to get through. That matters for Roselle residents who park near the border or commute through Roselle Park’s business district.

Local officials there are asking people to report unplowed or icy spots through the borough’s online reporting portal or by calling public works directly, and to reserve 911 only for life-threatening emergencies.

Weekend events close to home

Despite the cold, there are still ways to get out safely this weekend. In Roselle Park, the Recreation Committee’s Valentine Party is scheduled for late Saturday morning into the afternoon, offering families a warm indoor option close to town.

Over in the county park along Roselle’s eastern edge, the sports center continues its winter schedule with public skating and other activities, giving residents another nearby choice for cabin-fever relief as long as they bundle up for the trip.
