Route 201 pavement preservation work remains active in North Stonington

Route 201 pavement-preservation work remains an active part of North Stonington’s 2026 construction season. CTDOT says motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic during weekday work periods on the state highway.

State Project 0172-0553 covers approximately 2.19 miles of Route 201, from the Stonington town line at mile point 1.94 to Route 2 at mile point 4.13. The published completion target is October 9, 2026, although the Connecticut Department of Transportation says weather delays or other unforeseen conditions could modify the schedule.

Where the work is

The North Stonington segment runs along Route 201 between the Stonington/North Stonington town line and Route 2, also known as Norwich Westerly Road.

CTDOT’s March 27, 2026, advisory also covers separate Route 156 pavement-preservation work in East Haddam, Lyme and Old Lyme. That Route 156 project is distinct from the Route 201 work in North Stonington.

What CTDOT is doing

Project 0172-0553 includes surface patching, crack sealing and placement of an asphalt-rubberized chip seal. CTDOT says the treatment is intended for roadways that remain structurally sound but need surface rejuvenation.

In practical terms, the project is pavement preservation: It is intended to protect the existing roadway and extend its service life, not rebuild Route 201 from the full depth.

CTDOT’s July 31, 2025, planning announcement said the North Stonington project would use 100% state funds and identified it as State Project No. 0172-0553. The later construction advisory set April 1, 2026, as the start of the published construction and traffic-control window.

What drivers should expect

CTDOT says alternating one-way traffic will be used on Route 201 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the work. Signs and flaggers will guide motorists through the work zone.

The published materials do not provide a day-by-day progress update, identify the specific active segment for August 2, 2026, or estimate the length of individual delays. Drivers using Route 201 should allow for changing work-zone conditions and follow posted instructions.

Contract and schedule

The official bid tabulation lists Comer Contracting Inc. as the low bidder for the District 2 pavement-preservation contract, with a total bid of $2,507,889. The CTDOT construction advisory spells the contractor’s name “Commer Contracting, Inc.” The state’s previous-years award list records Project 0172-0553 as awarded to Comer Contracting, Inc. on December 17, 2025.

The bid tabulation identifies the contract as a 192-calendar-day District 2 project in New London County. CTDOT’s current advisory gives October 9, 2026, as the scheduled completion date, subject to weather and unforeseen conditions.

For North Stonington residents, commuters and local businesses, the main effect is the potential for weekday traffic control along the Route 201 corridor during the posted work window. The project’s stated purpose is to preserve an existing structurally sound pavement surface before more extensive deterioration requires costlier work.
