Rowan unveils $690 million West Campus development planned partly in Glassboro

Rowan University announced a $690 million West Campus Development Project on March 9, 2026, with portions planned in Glassboro and Harrison Township. The university says the project is designed around health, manufacturing innovation and workforce development and is expected to generate more than 5,000 jobs.

The project is not yet approved for construction. Rowan said implementation will be phased and that construction timelines are subject to municipal approvals. The university also identified planning boards, councils and town-hall meetings as part of the next phase.

Two areas of the proposed campus

Rowan’s West Campus materials divide the development into two areas. West Campus North is described as including the Rowan University Center for Manufacturing Innovation. West Campus South is described as including the Rowan University Wellness Village, connected to the university’s health-related work and Virtua Health College.

The announcement places the project across portions of the West Campus in Glassboro and Harrison Township. Rowan cited university enrollment of 24,500 while describing the scale and potential role of the development.

Fairmount Properties will serve as the project’s managing developer and partner. Rowan said the development will use a public-private model rather than proceed as one single construction effort. That phased structure leaves the timing and final form of individual components dependent on subsequent planning and approvals.

Jobs and local review

Rowan’s March 9 announcement projects more than 5,000 jobs. The university’s West Campus project page uses a different projection, describing more than 4,800 jobs. Both figures are estimates of potential employment, not completed job totals, and neither establishes that all projected jobs would be located in Glassboro.

Municipal review will be an important next step for the Glassboro portion. Rowan said university officials will meet with the borough’s planning board and council as the project advances. The Glassboro Planning Board lists its development-review role and has posted a 2026 meeting schedule that includes an Aug. 4 meeting.

Rowan’s announcement does not set a definitive construction start date or provide a detailed Glassboro-specific site plan. The project therefore remains a preliminary, multi-phase development proposal while the university and municipal bodies work through planning.

If it moves forward, the development could bring construction activity, employment and workforce-training opportunities while also affecting local business activity, taxes and traffic in and around Glassboro. Those effects remain prospective until the project receives the required approvals and individual phases are defined.
