Sacramento County to Close New Hope Road for $4.5M Bridge Replacement Project

Sacramento, CA – April 1, 2026 – A $4.5 million bridge replacement near Galt will close part of New Hope Road for months, reshaping rural travel.

Sacramento County is preparing for a major rural infrastructure upgrade that will reshape travel south of the city for much of the year.

New Hope Road Closure Begins April 10

A $4.5 million bridge replacement project will shut down a nearly three-mile stretch of New Hope Road near Galt from April 10 through November 30. The work will demolish and replace the aging New Hope Road Bridge at Grizzly Slough, according to county transportation officials.

The closure will run between Orr Road and West New Hope Road. While the corridor will be closed to through traffic, access for local residents will be maintained during construction.

In addition to replacing the bridge structure, crews will grade and pave roughly 400 feet of roadway on both sides of the crossing. The project is funded through a combination of federal bridge dollars and the Sacramento County Road Fund.

Detours and Regional Impact

Drivers should expect clearly marked detours using N. Thornton Road, Franklin Boulevard, Twin Cities Road and Christensen Road, depending on direction of travel.

For agricultural operators and freight traffic in the southern county, the closure may add extra travel time during peak planting and harvest months. County officials are urging motorists to plan ahead and follow posted signage.

Part of a Broader Infrastructure Push

The bridge replacement comes as state and regional agencies continue advancing transportation investments across the Sacramento area. Recent state approvals have directed billions statewide toward road rehabilitation, freight mobility and zero-emission infrastructure, with several projects slated for the Capital Region.

Locally, transportation planners are balancing rural road maintenance with larger corridor upgrades and long-term transit improvements. Projects like the New Hope Road bridge replacement highlight the ongoing need to modernize aging infrastructure while keeping communities connected.

Construction is expected to wrap up by late fall, restoring full access ahead of winter weather.
