Security tightens at local mosques after imam shooting

Police and community leaders increased security at area mosques this week after a local imam was shot at outside his home on Monday, Feb. 23. Ramadan prayers continued, but with added patrols, extra volunteers, and heightened awareness as investigators worked to identify a suspect.

Investigators have asked the public to share tips, doorbell footage, or other video. A vehicle of interest has been described as a white passenger car that may have minor front-end damage.

Salt Lake City airport cancellations ripple from a national winter storm

Travelers at Salt Lake City International felt the effects of a major winter storm in the eastern U.S. on Monday, Feb. 23, with 47 flights canceled and more delays stacked on top. Reports noted 13 additional flights were delayed, and many of the disruptions involved Delta’s schedules.

Airport operations were otherwise moving, but airlines warned that inbound aircraft and crews can be knocked out of position for days after a large storm.

Great Salt Lake outlook remains concerning, even after fresh snow

A local environmental report says this week’s snowfall may not be enough to reverse months of unusually low snowpack, raising the possibility the Great Salt Lake could approach historic lows by fall 2026. Conservation advocates say what matters most now is sustained snow that lasts into spring and boosts runoff.

For Salt Lake City residents, the stakes include air quality, wildlife habitat, and the region’s long-term water planning.
