Salt Lake City Daily: Pioneer Park revamp, housing zoning debate, and Temple Square closure plans
Salt Lake City, UT – February 27, 2026 – Pioneer Park rebuild begins, housing zoning shifts advance, and Temple Square prepares for a yearlong closure.
1) Pioneer Park overhaul officially gets underway
Downtown’s biggest park is headed for a major reset. Salt Lake City leaders kicked off a roughly $18 million revamp of Pioneer Park designed to make the space busier, greener, and easier to use day-to-day.
Plans call for new restrooms, a pavilion, a ranger office, a playground, a promenade and misting plaza, new sport courts (including pickleball), a fenced dog area, and more trees. The popular farmers market is expected to keep operating during construction, with work staged so only part of the park is closed at a time.
2) Housing and zoning changes move onto the Council agenda
Housing affordability is back in the spotlight as the City Council reviews proposed zoning updates meant to unlock more modest, family-sized options in neighborhoods that have traditionally been limited to lower-density housing.
The proposal includes expanding where accessory dwelling units could be allowed and adjusting rules in areas ringing the city core. City planners have pointed to a widening affordability gap between local incomes and the median home price, and the idea is to add ‘missing middle’ choices without waiting for large new subdivisions.
3) Conference Center closure announced ahead of Temple Square celebrations
Another big downtown change is coming to Temple Square. The Conference Center is expected to close to the general public for an extended stretch, starting March 30, 2026, as work ramps up ahead of a planned Salt Lake Temple reopening celebration in 2027.
Organizers say major scheduled gatherings will still be accommodated in limited cases, and parking operations are expected to remain available even as infrastructure upgrades and exhibit work move forward.
