San Luis Obispo Metro Gas Near $5.92; Diesel Above $7.13

Regular gasoline in the San Luis Obispo-Atascadero-Paso Robles metro averaged $5.921 per gallon in AAA’s July 31, 2026 price check, up slightly from the previous day. Diesel moved in the opposite direction, falling to $7.139 per gallon from $7.158.

These are metro averages covering San Luis Obispo, Atascadero and Paso Robles. They are not a single-station price and do not mean every pump in San Luis Obispo is charging the same amount.

Regular gas remains higher across each comparison

AAA listed regular gasoline at 0.3 cents above the previous day’s $5.918 average. The increase is small in a one-day comparison, but the metro average is also up 3.6 cents from a week ago, 22.4 cents from a month ago and $1.079 from the same point last year.

At the current metro average, a 15-gallon fill-up would cost about $88.82. The same amount of regular gas would cost about $16.19 more than it would have at the year-ago average listed by AAA.

That does not mean every household is seeing the same change. Station location, brand, payment method and local competition can produce meaningful differences, making it worthwhile for drivers to compare prices before filling up.

Diesel eases for one day but remains elevated

Diesel averaged $7.139 per gallon on July 31, down 1.9 cents from the prior day. The daily decline has not reversed the longer-term increase: diesel is 7.6 cents higher than a week ago, 34.1 cents higher than a month ago and $1.647 higher than a year ago.

That distinction matters for fuel-heavy operations. Contractors, delivery operators, agricultural businesses, service fleets and other diesel users may face higher operating costs even though the latest daily reading eased. A 100-gallon fill-up at the metro average would cost about $713.90, before station-level price differences.

Local pumps can vary from the metro average

San Luis Obispo County reporting has highlighted differences among local station prices, offering drivers a useful reminder that an average is not necessarily the price at the nearest pump. Individual prices can move differently from the broader metro reading.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration also tracks gasoline and diesel prices across national and regional markets. That data provides broader context, while AAA’s San Luis Obispo-Atascadero-Paso Robles row is the more relevant benchmark for local drivers.
