San Mateo Fuel Prices: Gas Nearly Flat, Diesel Eases but Both Rise

Regular gasoline prices serving San Mateo were nearly unchanged Wednesday, July 29, while diesel prices edged lower from the previous day. Both fuels, however, remained more expensive than they were a week earlier.

AAA’s latest San Francisco metro price check listed regular gasoline at $5.830 per gallon and diesel at $7.068 per gallon. The metro figures include the market serving San Mateo and should not be read as a San Mateo-only average.

Gas was flat day to day but higher over the week

Regular gasoline increased by just 0.1 cent from the previous day, making the daily movement effectively flat for most household budgets. Compared with a week earlier, though, the average was up 8.3 cents per gallon.

AAA also listed regular gas 21.0 cents higher than a month earlier and $1.194 higher than a year earlier. For a driver filling a 15-gallon tank, the weekly increase alone represents about $1.25 more per fill-up, while the year-over-year difference represents nearly $18 more for the same amount.

Diesel dipped Wednesday but has risen faster

Diesel moved in the opposite direction over the previous day, falling 2.5 cents per gallon in AAA’s latest comparison. Its broader trend was steeper, however: diesel was up 13.9 cents from the previous week, 39.4 cents from a month earlier and $1.710 from a year earlier.

That difference matters beyond drivers of diesel-powered vehicles. Higher diesel costs can work their way into operating budgets for contractors, landscapers, delivery fleets, service companies, restaurants and other businesses that rely on commercial transportation or equipment.

San Mateo prices can vary by location

A posted price at San Mateo County’s Coyote Point Marina offered a separate local reference: $6.75 per gallon for regular gasoline and $7.50 for diesel. Those are location-specific marina prices, not a citywide average for motorists, and they are not directly interchangeable with AAA’s San Francisco metro figures.

The gap illustrates why comparing locations before filling up may matter. Specialized facilities, neighborhood stations and high-traffic areas can post prices that differ substantially from a regional average.

For commuters, households and weekend travelers, regular gas is essentially holding steady from the prior day but remains on an upward weekly trend. Diesel users are seeing a small daily break, even as the fuel’s weekly, monthly and annual increases remain larger.
