Sanford Costco sign plan heads to Aug. 6 hearing as mall redevelopment advances

Sanford’s Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to consider a comprehensive sign program tied to the proposed Costco at Seminole Towne Center on Thursday, Aug. 6.

The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Sanford City Hall, 300 N. Park Ave. The sign program covers a nearly 49-acre section of the property and represents another formal land-use step for the largely vacant former mall site.

Hearing follows postponement

The Costco sign issue was postponed from an earlier meeting, according to News 6 / ClickOrlando. The city’s meeting listing shows the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting scheduled for Aug. 6 from 10 to 11 a.m. at City Hall.

The commission’s action will concern the comprehensive sign program. It would not by itself confirm that the proposed Costco is complete or that the broader Seminole Towne Center redevelopment has received every approval required for construction and future operations.

Proposed Costco would use former Macy’s site

The proposed Costco is planned for the former Macy’s location at Seminole Towne Center. News 6 reported that the planned warehouse would exceed 156,000 square feet.

The Costco proposal is part of a larger plan to redevelop the former mall property. News 6 reported that Seminole Towne Center closed in 2024, with its anchor stores remaining, and that Ardent Companies later finalized the purchase of the 76-acre property with plans to revitalize the site.

For Sanford residents, commuters and nearby businesses, the Aug. 6 meeting provides a specific opportunity to follow the city’s review of a project that could change future shopping activity and the use of the former mall property. Possible effects on traffic, customer patterns and surrounding businesses remain prospective while additional approvals and redevelopment work are pending.

Sign review is separate from construction approvals

A comprehensive sign-program decision addresses signage for the reviewed area. It is separate from demolition, building permits, construction approvals and other actions that may be required before the proposed warehouse can be completed.

Sanford’s Development Services Department says it coordinates planning, development review, permitting and inspection functions for city development and redevelopment. Those responsibilities give the city a continuing role as the former mall property moves through additional land-use and construction steps.

The Planning and Zoning Commission’s Aug. 6 meeting is the next scheduled formal review identified in the current city calendar. It is an important checkpoint, but not the final stage of the Costco proposal or the full Seminole Towne Center redevelopment.
