Schenectady Man Sentenced to 8 Years for Attempted Robbery
James R. Downing of Schenectady was sentenced to eight years in state prison on June 24 after pleading guilty to first-degree attempted robbery in a case involving a knife and the forcible taking of a pack of cigarettes.
The sentence was imposed in Schenectady County Court. It also includes five years of post-release supervision and a 20-year order of protection for the victim, according to the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office.
The case involved an offense that occurred in the City of Schenectady. Downing’s sentence brings the attempted-robbery prosecution to a final sentencing outcome and also resolves two other pending criminal cases against him.
What happened in the case
Prosecutors charged Downing with first-degree attempted robbery with a dangerous instrument. The facts identified in the case describe Downing as armed with a knife when he forcibly took a pack of cigarettes.
Downing pleaded guilty to the attempted-robbery charge on April 15, 2026. The guilty plea resolved the central criminal charge before the June sentencing proceeding.

Other cases resolved through the plea
The plea agreement also satisfied pending cases charging Downing with third-degree burglary and fourth-degree grand larceny.

That means the June 24 proceeding addressed more than the robbery charge alone. The eight-year prison term is the principal sentence announced in the case, while the other pending charges were included in the resolution.
Sentence includes supervision and protection order
In addition to the eight-year prison term, Downing received five years of post-release supervision. The supervision term is a separate part of the sentence from the order of protection issued for the victim.
The court also issued a 20-year order of protection. That order is intended to protect the victim through restrictions imposed by the court, and its duration extends well beyond the prison term announced in the case.
The combination of incarceration, post-release supervision and the long-term protection order sets the terms of the court’s response after Downing’s guilty plea. The sentence also formally closes the attempted-robbery case following the April plea and resolves the related burglary and grand-larceny matters.
