Seattle Pushes Shelter Expansion as Comic Con Draws Crowds Downtown
Seattle, WA – March 7, 2026 – City leaders move to expand tiny house villages as Emerald City Comic Con fills downtown and a science rally gathers at Seattle Center.
Seattle is heading into the weekend with a mix of big policy moves and even bigger crowds.
Mayor Unveils Plan to Expand Tiny House Villages
Mayor Katie Wilson this week rolled out legislation aimed at speeding up the creation of emergency shelter across the city. The proposal would allow larger tiny house villages, streamline permitting, and direct millions in city funds toward building new units.
The goal is to create 1,000 new shelter spaces this year. City leaders say the changes are designed to move people indoors more quickly and connect them with services. The plan now heads to the City Council for consideration.
Emerald City Comic Con Takes Over Downtown
Meanwhile, thousands of fans are flocking to the Seattle Convention Center for Emerald City Comic Con, running March 5 through March 8. The annual pop culture event brings celebrity guests, artists, and cosplayers from across the country.
Hotels and restaurants around downtown are seeing a boost, and traffic in the core is noticeably heavier. Organizers encourage attendees to use transit where possible.
Science Rally at Seattle Center
At Seattle Center today, a Stand Up for Science rally is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. at the Mural Amphitheater. Organizers say the event is part of a nationwide day of action focused on public health, research funding, and scientific integrity.
Large crowds are expected, and visitors to the Seattle Center area may encounter extra foot traffic throughout the afternoon.
What to Know
With major events downtown and at Seattle Center, drivers should plan for congestion and allow extra travel time. Transit agencies are operating regular weekend service.
