Sebastian Inlet Bridge Replacement Moves Into Multiyear Construction Phase

Preparatory work is underway on the replacement of the SR A1A bridge over Sebastian Inlet, moving the project into a multiyear construction phase that will affect drivers and visitors while preserving a planned vehicle crossing.

The Florida Department of Transportation identifies the project as Financial Project ID 445618-1-52-01, under contract T4729. FDOT says the project was let for construction on December 3, 2025, and that post-letting and pre-construction activities are ongoing. Its project page lists construction as scheduled to begin in spring 2026 and end in fall 2031.

Vero News reported on July 20, 2026, that FDOT contractors had been performing preparatory work for more than a month. That report described the broader official timeline as extending into 2032. The two schedule descriptions should be treated as attributed projections rather than a guaranteed completion date.

Webber won the $101.9 million contract

FDOT’s bid tabulation identifies Webber LLC as the winning bidder at $101,965,262.17. The contract allows 1,715 days for work on SR A1A in Sebastian Inlet State Park and in unincorporated portions of Indian River and Brevard counties.

The project is relevant to Sebastian residents, commuters and businesses because SR A1A provides a regional crossing. The bridge location, however, is not wholly within the City of Sebastian. The work is centered at Sebastian Inlet State Park, near the boundary between Indian River and Brevard counties.

Two-way traffic is planned during phased work

FDOT says the bridge will be built in phases to avoid a detour and a full bridge closure. Two-way vehicle traffic is intended to remain across the inlet, although temporary lane closures will be required during nonpeak hours.

The phasing is necessary because the existing right-of-way is narrow. Vero News reported that the new bridge must use some of the space occupied by the current span. The first portion will be built beside the existing bridge, after which traffic can be shifted to the new section. The older bridge can then be removed and the second portion built in its footprint.

For drivers, that means changing barriers, work zones and possible temporary delays over several years rather than a short road project. Vero News also reported that marine traffic is expected to continue, with occasional temporary safety restrictions possible during some operations.

Park remains open, but staging reduces access

Sebastian Inlet State Park remains open on both sides of the inlet. However, Vero News reported that the north-side main parking lot and other park features are closed or restricted for construction staging. The restrictions do not mean that all park facilities are closed.

People traveling from Sebastian to the park should expect changing parking availability and work-zone traffic controls. FDOT’s traffic plan also calls for temporary nonpeak lane closures, so crossing conditions may change as construction advances.

Indian River County’s transportation program identifies replacement of the Sebastian Inlet Bridge as a significant programmed transportation project. That county notice corroborates the project’s established regional role but is not evidence by itself that construction is currently occurring.

What the replacement will add

FDOT’s design calls for two 12-foot travel lanes, two 8-foot shoulders and two 12-foot shared-use paths. The project also includes increased vertical clearance, drainage improvements, navigation and safety features, crosswalks, and reconfigured park entrances.

The plans include two fishing and observation walks beneath the bridge, one extending from each shore. FDOT says the improvements are intended to address structural and functional deficiencies in the existing bridge, improve bicycle and pedestrian connections, raise clearance for resiliency, and improve safety.

For now, the main local expectation is continuity with disruption: the inlet crossing is planned to remain available, but the bridge, roadway and park surroundings will operate as an active construction zone through a schedule FDOT currently places into fall 2031, while local reporting describes the broader timeline as extending into 2032.
