South Royalton traffic remains affected by I-89 crossovers and VT 107 restrictions near Exit 3 as Royalton bridge rehabilitation continues through 2028.
Traffic controls near I-89 Exit 3 are continuing to affect travel around South Royalton as Vermont’s Royalton Bridge rehabilitation moves through another construction season.
The project covers the northbound and southbound I-89 bridges over VT 107, the New England Central Railroad and the White River. Vermont Agency of Transportation records identify the project location as the Town of Royalton in Windsor County, near Exit 3. South Royalton is the village within that town and the mailing location for Royalton municipal offices.
What drivers are encountering
A July 1 construction report from the Mountain Times said bridge deck and abutment work would continue near Exit 3 with lane crossovers, a 15-foot width restriction and a 55-mph speed limit on I-89. The report also identified restrictions on VT 107, including a 30-mph speed limit and a 14-foot height restriction beneath Bridge 26S.
Those restrictions matter especially for drivers using the interchange, commercial and freight operators, and anyone traveling between South Royalton and the surrounding VT 107 corridor. Vehicles that exceed the posted width or height limits need to account for the restrictions before entering the work area. Commuters and local businesses should also expect traffic patterns to change as work advances.
What the project includes
VTrans says the rehabilitation addresses deterioration in the bridges’ decks, rails, joints, bearings, steel and substructure. The work includes deck, rail, joint, bearing, steel and substructure repairs, along with related cleaning and recoating of steel components.
The two bridges are complicated work sites because they span three separate features below: VT 107, the New England Central Railroad and the White River. VTrans says the work is being completed in phases, with crossovers used to maintain interstate travel while the rehabilitation advances.
Two timelines to watch
The current traffic arrangement and the overall construction schedule are not the same deadline. The Mountain Times report identified the I-89 crossovers and related speed and width restrictions as expected to remain through fall 2027. The VTrans project factsheet, updated July 24, 2026, lists the broader construction schedule as running through summer 2028.
That means the present crossover pattern may change before the bridge rehabilitation itself is finished. The schedule is a planned construction timeline and may be adjusted as VTrans and the contractor move through successive work phases.
What South Royalton-area travelers should do
Drivers using Exit 3 should slow down, watch for lane diversions and allow additional time for changing work-zone controls. Freight and oversize-vehicle operators should pay particular attention to the 15-foot I-89 width restriction and the 14-foot clearance beneath Bridge 26S on VT 107.
The corridor is important for daily trips, business access, freight movement and emergency travel in and around South Royalton. Conditions may change as construction progresses, so travelers should check current VTrans and highway-construction updates before making trips through the work zone.
