Spokane Daily Local Headlines: Deadly-force investigation, immigrant aid funding, and North Spokane Corridor update
Spokane, WA – February 26, 2026 – Police shooting tied to homicide probe, council OKs $100K immigrant aid, Corridor plans update, plus World Cup fan zone news.
Public safety: Deadly-force incident now under independent review
A deadly-force incident in north Spokane is being investigated by the Spokane Independent Investigative Response (SIIR) team, according to a city police news release.
Police said officers responded late Feb. 24 to the 1800 block of West Carlisle Avenue while looking for a suspect connected to a recent homicide investigation. Officers reported the person was believed to be armed, negotiations were attempted, and the suspect later tried to run from the area while carrying what appeared to be a long gun. Police said an officer-involved shooting occurred and the suspect died at the scene. No officers or community members were reported injured.
SIIR is expected to handle updates going forward, with the case eventually routed for prosecutorial review.
City Hall: Council approves $100,000 for emergency immigrant assistance
The Spokane City Council approved a $100,000 agreement for the Spokane Immigrant Rights Coalition, creating what city leaders described as a Community Justice Fund for Immigrants.
The vote was 6-1. The agreement requires tracking and reporting on how funds are distributed, with regular reporting to the city. Supporters framed the funding as rapid, basic-needs help for families facing urgent immigration-related costs, while the lone dissenting vote raised concerns about process and oversight.
Transportation: North Spokane Corridor update as planning continues
Work on the North Spokane Corridor continues, with an updated look this week noting about 3.5 miles still left to build. Separately, a community meeting is scheduled for the evening of Feb. 26 to gather input on the final connection and nearby improvements.
Looking ahead: Spokane named an official FIFA World Cup 2026 fan zone
Organizers announced Spokane will host an official fan zone during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Riverfront Park’s Gesa Pavilion designated as the local site for watch parties and community events.
