Severe weather readiness ramps up this week

Local emergency officials are using Severe Weather Awareness Week to push practical prep: where you shelter, how you get warnings, and what you do when storms move fast.

A statewide tornado drill was scheduled for 11 a.m. today but was listed as cancelled. Even so, it is still a good moment to review your household plan, check batteries, and make sure you have more than one way to receive alerts.

A National Weather Service storm spotter class is scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the William J. Harrison Center (3140 Cass Ave.). The training is aimed at helping residents recognize hazardous conditions and report them so warnings can be more targeted.

Parking tickets pile up on a car no one will tow

A recent TV report zeroed in on an abandoned car that has apparently sat in the same spot since April, collecting $8,660 in tickets. Neighbors described it as a visible symbol of how hard it can be to get problem vehicles removed when responsibilities are split across city offices.

In the same reporting, city officials said tens of thousands of vehicles may be eligible for booting, while only a limited number of boots are available. For residents, the concern is less about one car and more about a system that can feel stuck block by block.

Police commissioners meet downtown this morning

The Board of Police Commissioners is scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. at police headquarters (1915 Olive St.), with an agenda and packet posted online. These meetings can touch everything from policy decisions to staffing and budget items, and they are one of the more direct windows into near-term public safety priorities.

New Fenton entertainment venue draws early crowds

A new entertainment center in Fenton is trying to build on a busy first weekend with attractions including curling lanes, duckpin bowling, golf simulators, karaoke rooms, and mixed-reality games. An 18-hole mini golf course is expected to open later in March or early April, and the business says it plans to pair early promotions with charitable giving.
