Peabody-area shooting investigation

Police say a 19-year-old man died after a shooting reported late morning Feb. 28 in the 1200 block of South 13th Street. Detectives said a suspect was detained for questioning as the homicide investigation continued.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact investigators directly or submit an anonymous tip through CrimeStoppers. For neighbors downtown, it’s another reminder to report suspicious activity quickly and share any camera footage that could help identify what happened.

City budget watch: police spending dispute

City leaders are publicly pushing back on a proposed police budget that would add tens of millions of dollars in additional costs. The mayor warned that absorbing the increase could force painful cuts to basic services and staffing across departments, while the police board and city attorneys continue to spar over what the city is required to fund under state control.

The budget process is still unfolding, but the debate has immediate stakes for residents: how much of the city’s revenue goes to policing, and what gets squeezed if other line items have to shrink.

Weather: slick roads possible for the Monday commute
