Storm Records, Highway Crash and Quake Rattle Modesto
Modesto, CA – March 16, 2026 – Record rainfall, a serious SR-99 crash and a nearby earthquake made for a busy weekend across the Modesto area.
It was an eventful stretch of days across Modesto, with wild weather, a major traffic collision and even a small earthquake shaking up the region.
Modesto Breaks Rainfall Record
Modesto set a new daily rainfall record over the weekend as a powerful storm system moved through the Central Valley. Preliminary data from the Modesto City-County Airport showed more than an inch of rain falling within 24 hours, surpassing a long-standing mark for the date.
Forecasters say additional showers are possible early this week, though the heaviest downpours have moved out. Local officials continue to monitor creeks and low-lying areas but have not reported widespread flooding within city limits.
Two Hospitalized After SR-99 Crash
Two people were hospitalized early Monday morning following a crash on northbound State Route 99 near the Kansas Avenue off-ramp.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened around 4:50 a.m. Emergency crews closed lanes temporarily while assisting the injured and clearing debris. The extent of injuries has not been fully detailed, but both individuals were transported for treatment.
Drivers experienced delays through the morning commute as traffic was diverted around the scene.
Earthquake Felt in Central Valley
A small earthquake measuring 2.6 magnitude was recorded near Corcoran on Sunday, lightly shaking parts of the Central Valley. While the epicenter was south of Modesto, some residents reported briefly feeling the tremor.
No damage or injuries have been reported. Seismologists note that minor quakes of this size are relatively common in California, though they can still catch residents off guard.
