Storm Threat, Record Heat and Road Work Lead Pittsburgh Weekend Headlines
Pittsburgh, PA – March 8, 2026 – Severe storms and record heat mark the weekend as road work and spring cleanups ramp up across the city.
Severe Weather and Record Heat
Pittsburgh saw near-record warmth on Saturday as temperatures climbed into the upper 70s, breaking a decades-old daily record. The heat was followed by a round of strong to severe storms that prompted a tornado watch across Allegheny County and much of Western Pennsylvania.
The National Weather Service warned of damaging wind gusts, large hail and the possibility of isolated tornadoes through Saturday evening. After the storms moved through, cooler air began filtering in, with calmer conditions expected to settle in by Sunday.
Steelers Join Statewide Cleanup Effort
With the NFL Draft and major tourism events on the horizon, state officials joined the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday to launch this year’s Pick Up PA initiative. The campaign encourages volunteers to help clear litter from roadsides, parks and waterways ahead of what is expected to be a busy spring and summer travel season.
Organizers say the effort is part of a broader push to showcase Pittsburgh and the Commonwealth as hundreds of thousands of visitors head to the region in the coming months.
Overnight Restrictions on I-376
PennDOT also announced new overnight lane and shoulder restrictions beginning Monday night on sections of I-376. On the Parkway East, crews will conduct median barrier reconstruction between the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and Edgewood interchange during weeknight hours.
Meanwhile, inbound Parkway West traffic will see shoulder restrictions near the West End and Fort Pitt Tunnel for landscaping work. Drivers should expect periodic slowdowns during overnight hours and are encouraged to check conditions before heading out.
Festival Grant Applications Open
Looking ahead to summer, the City of Pittsburgh will open applications Monday for its long-running Community Festival Program Grant. The program provides up to 30 neighborhood groups with reimbursement funding to support one-day community festivals between June and October.
City leaders say the grants are designed to strengthen neighborhood connections and help grassroots organizations bring residents together during festival season.
