Tacoma, WA – March 2, 2026 – Police probe linked hit-and-runs, schools post next-year calendar updates, and City Council eyes a condemnation vote.
Top story: Hit-and-run cases may be connected
Tacoma police are investigating two separate hit-and-run crashes that injured pedestrians on Saturday, Feb. 28. Officers say both incidents may involve an older white sedan that left the scene.
The first crash was reported around 10 a.m. near South 19th Street and South Cushman Avenue. The second was reported around 12:40 p.m. in the parking lot of the Pilot Express at 1440 Puyallup Ave. Police said the victims’ injuries were not considered life-threatening, but investigators believe the crashes may have been intentional and are looking at potential vehicular-assault charges.
Schools: Next year’s calendar details and schedule changes
Tacoma Public Schools shared its March 1 family and community update, including key dates for the 2026-27 school year. The first day of school for grades 1-12 is listed as Sept. 9, 2026, with kindergarten starting Sept. 14. Winter break is scheduled for Dec. 21, 2026 through Jan. 1, 2027, and the last day of school is June 23, 2027.
The district also says elementary schools will shift from trimesters to a two-semester schedule next year, changing how families see progress and final report cards. Families were also reminded about adjusted schedules during conference week, including early release on Thursday and Friday, March 12-13.
Jobs: Transportation hiring push continues March 2
TPS is hosting a transportation job fair Monday, March 2, from 2-4 p.m. at 6501 N. 23rd St. The district says attendees can learn about openings for bus monitors and drivers, apply on site, and speak with Human Resources about benefits for qualifying roles.
City Hall watch: East Portland Avenue project condemnation notice
A legal notice running March 2 highlights a planned City Council vote on March 10 at 5 p.m. tied to property acquisition for the East Portland Avenue (64th-72nd Streets) project. The notice says condemnation procedures could be used if an agreement can’t be reached for a site listed as 1609-1621 East 68th Street. Public comment is expected during the meeting and in writing ahead of time.
