Tampa Daily Brief: Burn Ban Extended, USF-Area Road Funding, and Spring Break Travel Ramps Up
Tampa, FL – March 5, 2026 – Burn ban extended again, $24M set for USF-area upgrades, TPA preps for spring break, and an emergency landing ends safely.
Wildfire risk: open burning ban extended again
Hillsborough County extended its emergency ban on outdoor open burning on March 5, citing ongoing drought conditions and elevated wildfire danger. The order prohibits outdoor open burning countywide and also bans fireworks, sparklers, and fire pits.
Outdoor grilling is still allowed if flames stay contained in a grill and the fire is constantly attended. County officials noted the order can only run seven days at a time under state law, but it can be renewed if conditions persist.
$24M approved for safer roads near USF’s planned Fletcher District
County commissioners voted March 4 to put $24 million toward transportation and safety work tied to the University of South Florida’s planned Fletcher District redevelopment north of campus. The funding targets improvements along Fletcher Avenue as the mixed-use district takes shape on the former campus golf course.
Plans discussed include roadway upgrades, new turn lanes, traffic changes, and a pedestrian bridge across Fletcher Avenue aimed at improving access and safety between the campus and the new district.
TPA upgrades roll out as spring break travel begins
Tampa International Airport expects about 3.1 million travelers from March 5 through April 13, and officials say new operational and tech upgrades are meant to reduce lines and bottlenecks. The airport is forecasting its busiest day on Sunday, March 22, with more than 90,000 passengers.
Highlights include new Airside shuttles, real-time security wait time displays, touchless ID for TSA PreCheck, enhanced processing for international arrivals, and options to reserve parking and order food ahead.
Emergency landing ends safely near Weaver Lane
Deputies and fire crews responded after a single-engine plane with one pilot reported mechanical trouble late March 3. The aircraft attempted an emergency landing on Weaver Lane, struck a power line and a tree, and came to rest near Weaver Lane and Rockhill Road. The pilot was evaluated on scene and was not injured.
