Utility Fee Proposal Advances

Colorado Springs Utilities is moving forward with a proposed natural gas safety compliance charge aimed at funding federally required pipeline upgrades. The multi-year plan would generate millions annually to modernize aging infrastructure and reduce long-term risk.

City officials say the upgrades are tied to new safety mandates and inspection standards. If approved later this spring, customers could see a modest monthly increase on gas bills beginning in 2026. Councilmembers are weighing how to balance infrastructure reliability with household affordability.

Powers Boulevard Expansion Update

Transportation leaders also provided an update on the next phase of the Powers Boulevard corridor buildout. The long-anticipated connection toward Interstate 25 near North Gate remains in progress, with design and right-of-way work continuing.

City planners say the expansion is critical to easing congestion on I-25 and supporting new residential and commercial growth on the north side. Funding partnerships through regional transportation authorities remain central to keeping the project on schedule.

Housing and Growth Pressures
