Vicksburg secures $6.96 million USDA loan for sewer upgrades
VICKSBURG, Mich. — USDA Rural Development has closed a $6,960,000 loan for wastewater-system improvements in the Village of Vicksburg, bringing financing into place for a project intended to improve sewer reliability and protect groundwater for more than 3,500 residents.
The agency announced the loan on March 10, 2026. The financing is being provided through USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental Programs. It is a loan, not a grant, and the USDA announcement does not state the final local repayment terms.
What the project includes
The work has four named components. The village plans to construct a new sewer force main, repair existing sanitary sewer lines on Sprinkle Road through lining, upgrade the Spruce Street lift station, and build a biofiltration system at Zylman Avenue and Sprinkle Road.
Those locations are within the village service area identified in the USDA release. Together, the improvements are intended to provide what USDA described as safe and reliable sewer infrastructure for more than 3,500 Vicksburg residents.
A force main is part of a wastewater system that moves sewage under pressure. Sewer lining repairs existing pipe without replacing the entire line, while lift stations help move wastewater through systems where gravity flow is not sufficient. The approved source packet does not provide additional engineering details about the planned work.
What residents know so far
The loan closure establishes the project’s financing, but it does not mean construction is complete. The USDA announcement does not provide a construction start date, completion deadline or detailed project schedule. It also does not say whether sewer user rates will rise or fall as a result of the project.
That leaves the timing and local financial effect unresolved for residents, businesses and other users of Vicksburg’s wastewater system. The packet also does not include a separate village financial record outlining repayment terms or rate impacts.
A separate water-system notice
On March 17, the Village of Vicksburg separately posted a notice of intent to seek federal financial assistance for improvements to its water distribution system. The notice identifies the village at 126 N. Kalamazoo Avenue and provides a public-comment channel.
That water-distribution notice is separate from the USDA-announced wastewater loan. The approved materials do not state whether the village’s application will be approved, how much assistance it seeks or when any water-system work would occur.
For the sewer project, the next known information point is a construction and implementation schedule from the village or USDA. No such schedule was included in the March 10 announcement.
