Virginia Tech begins work on Blacksburg residence halls planned for 1,200 beds

Virginia Tech is moving ahead with new residence halls on its Blacksburg campus, with construction listed as beginning in summer 2026 and the project planned to add 1,200 beds.

The university’s Division of Facilities identifies the work as part of an effort to expand residential capacity. The project could affect campus construction and transportation as work proceeds, while adding housing capacity as older residence halls are renovated.

New housing and existing-hall renovations

Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors approved new residence-hall work at its June 3, 2026, meeting, according to a report from WSLS 10. The board also voted to preserve living-learning communities.

The university has said that additional capacity would allow renovations of existing housing without significantly disrupting residential and dining programs. WSLS reported that some renovated dormitories may lose capacity, meaning the net housing gain after renovations could be under 1,000 beds.

That projected net figure is different from the 1,200 beds listed for the new-residence-halls project. The facilities page does not provide the project’s exact construction site, final cost or completion date. It also does not establish whether the new project and a separate residence-hall planning authorization are the same building.

A separate planning authorization

In August 2025, the Board of Visitors approved a $10 million planning authorization for a residence hall accommodating up to 600 beds. That authorization is a planning amount, not necessarily the final construction cost, and should not be combined with the 1,200-bed project without current board documents confirming the relationship.

For students and the broader Blacksburg rental market, the added capacity may ease some pressure while older university housing undergoes renovation. The available information does not establish that the project will reduce rents or eliminate the local housing shortage.

Other recent town actions

Blacksburg’s public-hearing records also list several separate town actions. The Town Council approved a master lease for 414 North Main Street by a 6-0 vote on July 14, 2026. The town heard a conditional-use request on Aug. 4, 2026, for office, medical-office and fine-arts-studio uses at 700 and 706 South Main Street and 105 Eakin Street SW.

On June 9, 2026, the council approved, by a 7-0 vote, an ordinance accepting and appropriating $284,476 in police grant funding. The same date, it approved accepting $451,012 in stormwater-preparedness grant funds and transferring $50,112 in stormwater-capital funds.

The next known step for the residence-hall project is construction during summer 2026. Virginia Tech has not yet published a final completion date or final cost for the 1,200-bed project.
