Walker’s Aydell Lane bridge reopens with one lane, 3-ton limit

The Aydell Lane bridge in Walker reopened at 4 p.m. on July 13, but the crossing is operating under significant restrictions rather than returning to unrestricted use.

The City of Walker says the bridge is open with one 12-foot-wide lane and a 3-ton weight limit. Buses and large trucks remain prohibited until further notice.

What drivers can expect

Vehicles that comply with the posted limits may use the crossing, but drivers should expect a narrow, one-lane route. Vehicles weighing more than 3 tons must use another route, as must buses and large trucks.

The restrictions matter for residents, commuters, delivery operators and businesses that rely on Aydell Lane. Vehicles that cannot meet the bridge’s weight or size rules will need to plan for a different crossing. The city says the restrictions remain in effect until further notice.

Replacement remains a separate project

The reopening is separate from the longer-term Aydell Lane Bridge Replacement project. Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development records identify the replacement as a City of Walker project in Livingston Parish. The project scope calls for replacing the existing structure with a box culvert or concrete bridge.

The current DOTD upcoming letting list shows the replacement on the schedule for a Dec. 9, 2026, letting. That date is a procurement milestone for the project. It does not show that construction has begun, establish when construction will start or guarantee when a completed replacement will open.

What remains uncertain

For now, the confirmed change is the limited reopening that began July 13. The approved records do not establish a construction start date, completion date or date for unrestricted bridge access.

Residents and businesses using the crossing should check updated City of Walker notices before relying on the current access rules, particularly if they operate buses, heavy trucks or delivery vehicles that may exceed the posted limit.
