Waukegan schools prepare staffing changes before Aug. 17 start
Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 is preparing staffing recommendations as it works to align employees and resources before the 2026-27 school year begins Aug. 17.
The district posted a staffing and budget update July 27. The Waukegan Board of Education was expected to consider staffing recommendations as part of the resource-alignment process, putting the focus on how schools will be staffed as the first day approaches.
The available district notice does not say how many positions could be affected. It also does not identify whether the recommendations involve layoffs, vacancies, reassignments or another staffing change. Those distinctions matter for employees and for families trying to understand how school operations may look when classes resume.
Staffing decisions are still pending
The district has described the staffing work as part of an ongoing effort to align staffing and resources. The notice identifies the board’s expected consideration of recommendations, but it does not provide a final staffing count or a final list of changes.
That means the immediate development is the process moving toward board consideration, not a confirmed announcement of layoffs or a completed restructuring. Additional board records or district updates would be needed to establish the number and type of positions involved.
The timing gives the issue a near-term effect for Waukegan schools. The 2026-27 school year is scheduled to start Monday, Aug. 17, leaving the district to resolve or communicate any approved staffing changes before students return.
OrganicLife approved for food service
Separately, the board approved OrganicLife as District 60’s new food-service provider. The district announced that decision in a July 15 update concerning food service and district facilities.
Free breakfast and lunch will continue for all students, according to the district. The food-service change therefore affects the provider serving the district’s meal program, while the universal free-meal policy remains in place.
The available announcement does not include the contract’s value or a more specific start date beyond its connection to the 2026-27 school year. It also does not provide information about possible changes to menus, meal prices or service quality.
Registration help scheduled before school begins
Returning-student registration assistance was scheduled for Aug. 3-6 at eight locations. The assistance window comes two weeks before the scheduled first day of school and gives returning families a defined period to get help with registration before classes begin.
The district’s approved updates connect three preparations for the new school year: staffing and resource alignment, a new food-service provider, and registration support for returning students. The staffing recommendations remain the part awaiting board consideration, while the OrganicLife selection has already been approved.
For families and employees, the next key information will be any board action or district communication that identifies the staffing recommendations’ scope. The packet does not provide a board meeting date, a position total or additional operational details, so those points remain unresolved ahead of Aug. 17.
