Weekend Briefing: Spanish Mini-Camp, Vine Cleanup, and Shop-Local Rewards in Hyattsville
Hyattsville, MD — February 7, 2026 — Weekend features kids’ Spanish mini-camp, invasive vine cleanup in Ward 4, and rewards for shopping at local shops.
Hyattsville Weekend Briefing
Hyattsville heads into the first February weekend with family activities, hands-on environmental work, and a few behind-the-scenes city updates.
Spanish mini-camp brings language learning to Driskell Park
A new Spanish immersion mini-camp is running today at the Driskell Park Recreation Center for children in kindergarten through third grade. The full-day program blends games, art projects, and recreation with conversational Spanish so kids can pick up vocabulary while they play.
The camp is being treated as a pilot for a possible weeklong summer option. Families are encouraged to share feedback through a short survey so staff can gauge interest and fine-tune future sessions.
Volunteers work to free trees from invasive vines in Ward 4
Also today, volunteers are gathering in Ward 4 for an invasive vine removal effort based out of Heurich Park. The project focuses on homes in designated areas where vines are choking street and yard trees.
The event is part of a broader regional effort to protect the tree canopy. Tools and basic training are provided on site, and students can earn service-learning hours by helping neighbors clear vines from their properties.
Shop-local rewards program boosts neighborhood businesses
A new shop-local rewards program is giving residents points when they spend money at participating Hyattsville businesses. Shoppers earn rewards through a mobile app and can redeem them on future visits, keeping more dollars circulating close to home.
The city has highlighted the program as a simple way to support independent restaurants and retailers. Early sign-ups even come with a small bonus to get residents started.
City seeks bids and prepares for budget season
City staff are currently accepting proposals for printing and mailing services for the community newsletter, with bids due later this month. A separate solicitation is underway to reinstall and upgrade the audiovisual system in the council chambers, aimed at improving public meeting broadcasts.
Budget work for the next fiscal year is also ramping up, with the first formal work session scheduled for mid-February. Residents will have several chances this spring to follow the numbers, share priorities with councilmembers, and comment before the final budget is adopted.
