West Valley City Sets Hearing on Proposed Tax Increase
West Valley City has scheduled an Aug. 11 public hearing on a proposed property-tax increase connected in part to nine new firefighter positions and the cost of maintaining city operations.
The hearing will be part of the process for final adoption of the city’s tentative Fiscal Year 2026-27 budget. The proposed general operating budget is approximately $124 million, and city materials say about 55% is allocated to public safety.
The City Council took tentative-budget action on May 12, 2026. The proposed tax increase is not final. Residents will be able to comment before the council completes its consideration of the budget and related property-tax proposal.
What the proposed increase would support
City budget materials connect the proposed increase to nine additional firefighter positions. The staffing proposal comes alongside broader cost pressures identified in the budget discussion, including salary increases, employee recruitment and retention, insurance, utilities and other personnel expenses.
That means the proposal is not limited to a single staffing line. The tentative plan combines an expansion of fire staffing with funding for the ongoing costs of employing city workers and providing day-to-day services.
Public safety represents the largest identified share of the proposed general operating budget at approximately 55%. The figure describes the proposed budget allocation, not a final spending total or a separate dollar amount for firefighter positions.

The public hearing is scheduled for Aug. 11, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in the West Valley City Council chambers at 3600 Constitution Boulevard.
The hearing is the next formal public decision point for the proposed tax increase and the tentative budget. The city’s tentative-budget resolution sets the hearing for final budget adoption and identifies residents’ opportunity to provide public comment.
Residents considering the proposal will be weighing its potential effect on property-tax bills against the city’s stated priorities: adding nine firefighter positions, supporting recruitment and retention, covering salary and benefit-related costs, and maintaining essential operations.
What remains to be decided
The May 12 action established a tentative budget rather than a final spending plan. The resolution treats the tentative budget and property-tax impact schedule as interim documents, so the final tax rate and adopted budget remain subject to council action.
The number of firefighter positions ultimately funded will likewise depend on the final plan and the revenue available under it. The current nine-position figure is the number described in the proposal, not a completed hiring result.
For city residents, the decision has two direct local implications. It could change the amount collected through property taxes, and it could determine whether the city adds the proposed firefighter positions while absorbing higher personnel, insurance, utility and other operating costs.
The Aug. 11 hearing gives the public a scheduled opportunity to address those priorities before West Valley City moves from its tentative budget toward final adoption.
